R Gopinath wins Centenary Open

R Gopinath continued his good form during the week end of the 39th Niligiri autum Meet . After having won the Elgi Trophy a day earlier he continued his good form on day one of this 2 day open event, with a 2 over 72 to establish a 5 stroke advantage over his nearest rivals P R Ramakrishnan and N K Mahesh who  returned with identical scores of 7 over.
Day 2 began in typical Ooty weather. With a slight drizzle through the first three holes the leader group was content in keeping the ball in play. Form seemed to be deserting Gopinath who steadily dropped shots and allowed Ramakrishnan to find his way into contention. But the defending champion blew his chances with double  bogeys in the 17th and 18th holes , allowing Gopinath to win by 3 strokes with a 2 day score of 155. Ramakrishnan with 158 finished runner up and won the Seniors Open from Mohan Nambiar who finished with a score of 164.
It is interesting to note that as a teenager 26 years ago R Gopinath had won this event, then played as the Lakshmi Gold Cup.

Eleven year old  K Suryakumar won the handicap event with a nett score of 128. A Ramamurthy finished runner .

The three day event was sponsored by MOBIL.
